Digital Canada a bloody business!
“If you pick the right people and give them the opportunity to spread their wings and put compensation as a carrier behind it you almost don’t have to manage them” – Jack Welch
Unfortunately for information technology professionals working in Canada, Canadian businesses exploit antiquated Canadian labour laws regarding technology professionals.
I look forward to the day when Canadian technology professionals are emancipated. Then, perhaps, Jack Welch’s quote above will allow these professionals to spread their wings, and provide Canadian businesses with the innovative lift they deserve, otherwise these technological slaves will simply continue to line the pockets of the wealthy.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, “Information technology professionals are not entitled to overtime pay.” Ontario employers use this loophole to force IT professionals to work overtime hours for no extra pay. If IT workers refuse to work these hours they will be threatened with termination. The employer will continue to promise more and more work to clients and expect their IT professionals to absorb this additional work without additional pay. The employer and client reap the benefits and the IT professional sees his/her hourly wage diminished.
